Wolves down 3-1 in final

Posted: March 31, 2019 in News and notes

The Ripley Wolves have a big hill to climb after a 5-2 loss on Sunday afternoon in front of another capacity home crowd.

They now trail the Clinton Radars 3-1 in the WOAA Senior AA final.

After an hour’s delay due to a regional power outage, Clinton scored two in each of the first two periods of this hard-hitting affair. Ripley made some adjustments that paid off quickly in the third, scoring just 14 seconds in, and adding another a couple of minutes later to give the home crowd life. But, a breakaway goal put Clinton up by three with 13 left in the third, and that’s how it finished.

Ripley’s goals were scored by Dan Nicoloff, from Ben Hughes, and Patrick Looby, shorthanded and unassisted.

Ryan MacDonald played the first 40 minutes in RIpley’s net and was excellent, but, in an attempt to spark the team entering the third, Jason Hamilton came into the net and was strong as well.

Ripley will look to stave off elimination on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. in Clinton. Game 6, if necessary, will be Saturday at 3 p.m. in Ripley, while Game 7 will be Sunday, in Clinton, at 4 p.m.

As we are expecting unprecedented crowds for our WOAA Senior AA final against the Clinton Radars, the Wolves have some advice for fans as we prepare to host Game 1 on Saturday, March 23, at 8 p.m.

• Show up early to guarantee your spot. We’ll open the Wolves Den around 6:45 p.m. to help you pass the time. There are no pre-sold tickets to the game, so it’s first-come, first-served. Expect Clinton’s fans to travel well, so plan your night accordingly.

• Respect barriers. Please note the area between the Wolves players’ bench and the Olympia door is for Wolves players, executive and team staff only. Please do not enter the dressing room hallway either, as this is for players and team representatives only.

• The stands are not licensed for alcohol. As per the team’s policy for the 2018/19 season, no alcohol will be permitted outside the Wolves Den.

• To help ease the line-up at the bar during the first and second intermissions, a secondary bar will be set up for beer sales only, against the south-facing windows. You must already have a drink ticket to use the secondary bar as there will be no sales at this temporary location.

• Kids, don’t forget your Wolf heads that we passed out earlier in the season! This is a great way to show your support for the team, and let’s hear you howl!

Most importantly, enjoy this fantastic run the Wolves are on. The players, coaches, trainers and executive have dedicated countless hours to this season, and we should all be excited for what we’ve accomplished (but definitely hoping for four more wins!).

For the first time in modern team history, the Ripley Wolves will play for the WOAA Senior AA championship, after they ousted Durham on Saturday night with a 7-3 win.

Ripley stretched their lead to 6-1 with second period goals from Meurs and Nicoloff, with assists going to Seiler and Jeff Alcombrack on the Meurs goal, and Alcombrack and Walton on the Nicoloff marker.

Durham added one to make it 6-2, but Walton made it 7-2 late in the second, ostensibly chasing Cats goalie Gatlin Burt, who didn’t start the third. Assists went to Seiler and Britton.

The Thundercats would add one on Wolves goalie Ryan MacDonald early in the third to make it 7-3, but they wouldn’t get any closer.

The Wolves win the hard-fought series in six games and will face the Clinton Radars, who finished their series vs Saugeen Shores in six with a Saturday night win.

In their only meeting this season Clinton beat Ripley 4-2 in a wildly entertaining game. Watch ripleywolves.com and follow us on Twitter and Facebook for the schedule when it’s determined.
