Wolves split weekend games in tune-up for holiday weekend

The Ripley Wolves split a pair of weekend games against the teams they’re sandwiched in between in the North Division standings.

The Wolves hosted Shelburne on Friday night, with the winner assuming sole possession of third place in the division. Although it was a fast-paced, entertaining contest, the Wolves came out on the short end of a 4-2 loss.

The Wolves trailed the Muskies 1-0 after one, but Nick Locking tied it up early in the second, from Mark Stanley and Travis VanGaver. Shelburne didn’t let up though and scored two goals in a one-minute span midway through the second to take a lead they wouldn’t relinquish, and added a fourth with a minute left in the mid frame.

Jeremy McQuillin scored four minutes into the third, from Kyle Wreford and Darrin MacDonald, to pull the Wolves to within two, but the home team just couldn’t find the back of the net, even on powerplays, including a two-man advantage in the dying minutes.

Tom Church was strong between the pipes for the Wolves, stopping 26 shots, while the Wolves pounded 41 at Shelburne’s goalie.

On Saturday night, the Wolves hit the road for Durham looking to avenge the previous night’s loss. Kurt Edwards got the call in net and was incredible, stopping 41 shots on the way to a 2-1 win.

The Wolves took the lead early in the game, finishing the first period up 2-0. Goals were scored by Travis VanGaver and Brian Stanley (powerplay). Assists went to MacDonald, Mark Stanley (2) and Chad Colling.

The Wolves defence was strong in front of Edwards, but credited their goalie for stealing the win after giving up only one powerplay goal, late in the second period.

This is a big weekend for the Wolves, as they host the Lucknow Lancers in the annual holiday game and Christmas party, on Sat., Dec. 22. The Wolves game starts at 7:30 p.m., but as an added bonus, the Lucknow Legends women’s hockey team will face Belmont at 5:30 p.m. The Legends, who feature the finest ladies hockey players from Ripley, Lucknow, Kincardine and everywhere in between, play a fast-paced, exciting brand of hockey, so be sure to bring all the sports fans in your family out for a doubleheader of fantastic, local hockey.

Both the Wolves and Legends games are sponsored by Lippert/Colling Trucking.
